Federal Council confirms extended restrictions

National News // Jan. 7, 2021

The Federal council has confirmed the existing restrictions will continue for another few weeks - and cantons will lose the right to deviate from the federal rules, even if they have a low infection rate.

The government say the rules will stay in force at least until the end of February.

This means bars and restaurants will stay closed, even in those cantons that were allowing them. Cultural venues, such as cinemas and museums will be closed, but shops can stay open. However, there will be limits on how many people can be inside at any one time and they must all close by 7pm and cannot open on Sundays.

There remains some flexibility for ski resorts. Cantons can choose to open them if infection rates are low and the local hospitals have spare capacity.
