More people leaving the church
More people are leaving the church than ever before.
The latest figures from the Swiss Institute of Pastoral Sociology say nearly 32,000 renounced their faith last year – up more than 10,000 from the previous year.
The numbers are collected from those who choose not to have a portion of their tax sent to the church.
That explains why there are stark cantonal differences. In Geneva, there were virtually no drop outs – but in Basel City, nearly 5% said they wanted out of the church. There’s no tax implication in Geneva.
