Switzerland now a 'problem' and pointless press conference
The number of infections continue to rise. Over 5,000 new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours.
Valais remains the worst affected canton with over 1,000 cases per 100,000. Canton Jura is now the second worst at 873.
Switzerland is now being seen as a problem in Europe with its sky rocketing infection rate. An article in the German news magazine Der Spiegel says the Swiss approach has been too cautious and a headline in the Italian press says Italy is now worried about Switzerland.
Germany has now placed the whole of this country in an at-risk category. Anyone visiting has to quarantine for two weeks.
But there are some exceptions for those travelling from the bordering cantons – if they don’t intend to stay more than 24 hours at a time.
Authorities in canton Aargau say their track and trace system is under threat and is enlisting the help of civil protection officers.
A press conference yesterday in Bern was seen as lackluster – especially from health minister Alain Berset. After being heavily trailed and then delayed, many were expecting major announcements from the government. But the message was the cantons should be doing more. On Twitter comments on the CoronaEnglish feed, one pointed out nothing useful was said and another said sarcastically, ‘thanks Captain Alain Obvious’.
