Ticino police officer banned for speeding while on emergency
A Ticino police officer has been suspended from driving and given a 2-year suspended prison sentence for speeding.
The fact he was on an emergency call and using lights and sirens is not an excuse.
The officer was driving at 102 kph in a 50 zone. He was racing to attend the scene of an accident.
The defence lawyer is appealing. Maria Galliani says it’s wrong when a court decides on the urgency of the situation in hindsight when a police officer has to make that decision in seconds.
But an earlier ruling by the federal court in a similar case in Geneva in 2014 determined that the police are not entitled to create a danger even if they are trying to avert a danger.
