Bern needs to pay reparations for slave trade
There are demands the canton of Bern acknowledges its role in the slave trade in the 18th century and pay compensation to the descendants of slaves.
In the wake of the international Black Lives Matter movement, members of the Alternative Left Bern party in the city council say the canton and city should pay compensation.
It’s been shown the then State of Bern owned shares in the English South Sea Company between 1719 and 1734. The company made its fortune in the slave trade.
