Geneva battered by short but violent storm
A short violent storm brought chaos to Geneva’s streets yesterday evening. Pipelines exploded, hail battered Bardonnex and fallen trees blocked roads.
Meteosuisse issued a red alert for a few minutes as the city was hit with 20mm of rain in just a few minutes. The alert stopped all ground transport for about a quarter of an hour.
The storm knocked out one of the emergency phone lines for a few hours.
Social media is full of pictures of flooded streets and overflowing drains.
Cantonal engineers will make a deeper damage assessment later today.
