Daily infection rate jumps to level seen in mid-April

National News // Aug. 13, 2020

The daily infection rate continues to climb and is now back at a level not seen since mid-April. The Federal Health Office says there were 274 new cases in the last 24 hours.

The number is a jump from yesterday which saw 187 new cases.

There have been 12 new hospital admissions in the last 24 hours and one more death.

Despite the spike in infections the government is set to loosen restrictions further. From October events of more than 1,000 people will be permitted, but organisers will have to get cantonal permission each time.

The restriction which started in February was set to end next month.

At a press conference yesterday, the government says society needs cultural and sporting events.

Many companies and sports clubs are warning they would go bust if the event restrictions remained in place for much longer.

Meanwhile, figures from the Geneva Statistical Office reveals the death rate in the canton between April and June was up 20% compared to the same time last year.

The figures mean an extra 162 people died in the canton. The vast majority of those were aged over 65.
