Detention guard could be charged with asylum seeker death
A police guard who was supposed to be watching detainees in a Vaud detention centre could face charges of negligent homicide after a man suffered an epileptic seizure for an hour and a half and then died.
Lawyers representing the family of the Gambian asylum seeker say his life could have been saved if he was given medical attention earlier.
20-year-old Lamin Fatty was first mistakenly identified as a failed asylum seeker by border guards and sent to a deportation centre in La Blécherette in October 2017. The border guards have been reprimanded for their mistake.
Prosecutors say the detention guard could be charged following the death, defence lawyers point out the guard was in charge of 30 cells at the time.
