Sanctions applied against Nicaraguan officials over human rights issues
Switzerland is applying sanctions against six Nicaraguan government officials and urges the authorities in the central American country to uphold human rights and international law.
The move mirrors action by the European Union.
The Federal Council says the sanctions are not designed to target the Nicaraguan people. It applies to those with close ties to the president, Daniel Ortega.
It stops the individuals from using international bank accounts and from travelling.
