Economic effect of lockdown to be felt for sometime as benefit claims increase
The economic effect of the lockdown will be felt for some time.
The NZZ newspaper says thousands are now claiming benefits as their jobs have been lost, especially in the virus hotspots of French and Italian speaking regions.
Most of those new claimants are the self-employed and those in the country as short-term residents, such as asylum seekers. It’s expected the total bill could reach CHF 4bn.
Also, public transport companies across the country are likely to lose over a billion francs due to a collapse in use and numbers still remain below pre-lockdown levels.
