Small fraction of public wearing masks on public transport

National News // June 18, 2020

There are further calls to make mask wearing on public transport compulsory after a survey shows only a small fraction of commuters wear one, despite infections rising again.

The Tages-Anzeiger newspaper used video footage of passengers at stations and counted how many people had masks on – the answer is only 6%.

Swiss Federal Railways say the numbers could be better than that as some passengers may have removed their masks as soon as they got off the train.

There’s only the recommendation to use a mask if the 2-meter distance rule can’t be met.

A study by the ETH in Zurich suggest the R infection rate number is now at 1.14. Above 1 means the infection is spreading.

The latest figures from the Federal Health office continue to show a worrying climb in Covid-19 infections.

In the last 24 hours, 27 new people have contracted the infection – but there were no new deaths.
