New traffic rules from next year
A new series of traffic rules have been unveiled – they will take effect from the beginning of next year.
After successful trials in some parts of the country, cyclists and moped riders will be able to turn right on a red light.
Motorists who don’t create a security lane on an autoroute if the traffic backs up could be fined. Drivers should move either to the left or right to make sure emergency vehicles can reach the site of an accident.
Also, adherence to the so called ‘zipper protocol’ will be compulsory. In the case of one lane closed, each car should let one in in front of it.
And for the first time in over 50 years, alcohol can be sold at autoroute rest stops. The ban was brought in in 1964 with drink-drive laws.
The government has decided that even if you can buy a bottle of wine on the road – it doesn’t mean you have to drink it there and then.
