US citizens could be prioritised in case of Switzerland producing vaccine
The Sunday press is speculating that even if a new Covid-19 vaccine is produced in Switzerland, US citizens could be prioritised.
The US pharmaceutical company Moderna has signed a 10 year contract with the Swiss firm Lonza to mass produce a vaccine. Under the deal, the doses would be sent to the US first.
Production of a new vaccine is due to start in July, despite it not being known how effective it will be. Lonza says it can produce a billion doses a year.
But analysts say if the vaccine proves effective, the demand will be such that the patents would have to be shared globally bringing in European and Asian producers.
