Severe drought not featured in news due to virus

National News // April 23, 2020

If it wasn’t for the virus, the main news would be the severe drought hitting the country.

There hasn’t been a significant rainfall for weeks – with some areas not getting any rain at all in April so far, including Basel, Bern, Geneva, Sion and Schaffhausen.

Smaller lakes are drying up – the Sihlsee in canton Schwyz is now just a cracked muddy plain.

The same is true for other lakes in canton Obwalden.

A forest in Basel Country caught fire last night, burning 2,500 square meters, the cause if the fire is unknown – but many areas are now under strict fire controls.

The lack of rain is also bad for hay fever sufferers as the pollen is not being washed out of the air.
