Calls to the poison hotline have surged almost threefold from 130 this time last year to 350 cases since the beginning of the year.

Most calls are from parents after small children have swallowed disinfectant.

The good news is, in the vast majority of cases, there will be no long-term harm.

The child may vomit, or appear drunk for a while due to the ethanol - which could be dangerous as they may fall and injure themselves.

The Tox Info line can be reached by calling 145 from anywhere in the country and they have English speaking operators.
