Solidarity with neighbouring France whilst cross-border trains cancelled
Twenty patients from France are now being cared for in Swiss hospitals.
The French ambassador to Switzerland, Frederic Journes sent a message of thanks via social media saying he would “never forget the solidarity of our Swiss neighbours in this ordeal”.
The ambassador also confirmed France is working with Switzerland to try and ease the supply lines of surgical face masks between the two countries.
Swiss federal railways have cancelled all cross-border trains between Italy and France - in a move ordered by the Italian authorities.
That also applies to the intercity services between Milan and Basel, Brig and Zurich.
More charter flights have returned Swiss citizens from South America and Africa, with more planned for the coming days.
Officials in Ticino - the canton worst affected by the outbreak - have asked Swiss residents in the German-speaking parts NOT to travel to south during the Easter break.
