National News // March 16, 2020

The federal government is expected to announce far reaching restrictions later today in an effort to stem the spread of Covid-19.

So far it is the cantons that have taken the lead. Some have banned all but essential shops and businesses from opening – such as Ticino, Basel-Country, Neuchatel and Jura – other cantons have ordered the closures of cinemas, gyms, swimming pools and bars.

Parliament has suspended its spring session which should have started today.

Switzerland is one of the worst affected countries in the world with 1,500 confirmed cases and 13 deaths, according to the Federal Health Office.

The government has now banned gatherings of more than 100 people, closed schools, and brought in tighter border controls.

It has also announced a CHF 10bn aid package for companies that are likely to be hit by lost business caused by the virus.

But unlike some countries – bars and restaurants can stay open, but they have to limit the number of customers to 50.
