Many public spaces will be closed, including some schools, cinemas, gyms and bars.

Cantonal health officials say infections are spreading faster than they predicted. In Ticino alone there are 128 infected, 27 in hospital and 11 in intensive care.

School for younger children will be voluntary – and those from grade 9 upwards will be closed.

The canton says the idea is to try to separate children from grandparents. Older people are more at risk from the virus.

Restaurants and hotels will be limited to 50 customers.

The restrictions will stay in place until 29th March.

The federal government has announced several border point closures with Italy. But its not stopping crossings altogether. The move will allow better monitoring for workers entering Switzerland.
