Italian shutdown affecting neighbouring Ticino
The Italian shutdown is affected neighboring Swiss cities in canton Ticino.
Chiasso is reported as being deserted. Restaurants are empty and the main pedestrian zone very quiet.
Although cross border workers are allowed from Italy into the canton – following an agreement between Bern and Rome – the traffic was only about half yesterday.
Overnight, the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, said the restrictions now cover the whole country – people have to stay at home unless it's unavoidable.
The restrictions are a worry for Ticino which relies on Italian border workers – especially in the health sector.
Covid-19 infections are continuing to rise in the country, with 1,800 new infections reported yesterday.
