Burnout on the rise as more workers signed off
More and more workers are being signed off by their doctors for burnout.
Figures from health insurance companies show the number of work days lost have increased by 50% over the past eight years.
Those most at risk are aged between 40 and 50.
Workplace psychiatry experts say doctors are too quick to sign patients off – and in many cases it would be better for them to continue to work half time.
Figures suggest just having time off is not enough. In two thirds of cases, when a worker returns, they are soon terminated anyway.
The government believes stress related illnesses costs the economy CHF 10bn year.
