Swiss newspapers ask for more subsidies
Swiss newspaper publishers are calling on the government to provide more subsidies for the industry – otherwise many titles will have to close.
The newspaper association says a vibrant local press is essential for a federalized democracy.
Publishers are asking for a further CHF 90m a year to help fund newspaper distribution and delivery. The government is proposing a further CHF 20m in top of the current CHF 30m.
Papers have been hit by online competition. Digital subscriptions are not generating the same revenue as physical editions.
The association represents 270 titles across the country.
