Trump administration puts WTO future under threat
The future of the Geneva based World Trade Organization is under threat as the system designed to enforce trading rules across the world will effectively come to an end today.
The US president Donald Trump has blocked the WTO from appointing new members to a panel that hears trade disputes. There are normally seven members. But that’s down to three – and their term expires today.
Many say the WTO is facing its deepest crises since it was set up 20 years ago.
The Trump administration says the decision to allow China to claim developing nation status, despite the fact its now the second largest economy in the world, is one of the main reasons behind the US stance.
