A lack of police manpower is being blamed for a major Geneva police station being closed on Saturday afternoon and only two patrols were out on the street to cover the whole canton.

Geneva police say Saturday afternoon was particularly busy as many officers were involved with the Escalade celebrations and paperwork.

Police unions say they lack as many as 700 officers and the force is operating in a permanent state of emergency.
