EU court rules Switzerland can keep its guns
The European Court of Justice has determined Switzerland is a special case and army members can continue to keep their assault rifle at home.
The EU court made the ruling following a complaint by the Czech Republic over this country’s unique gun laws.
Although Switzerland is not in the EU, it is obliged to follow some European rules due to its membership of the Schengen passport free travel zone.
Judges decided home ownership of military weapons is traditional and the guns are well tracked.
The ruling removes one of the arguments against closer EU ties being made by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party.
