Flood defence work to receive another CHF 1bn
Parliament has released another billion francs to build flood defences along the Rhone River.
Flood prevention works have been ongoing since 2009. It’s expected it will take another 20 years for the work to be finished.
Embankments are being improved along 163 km of river banks in mainly canton Valais. Some work will extend into Vaud.
The need for better defences was brought home in the year 2000 when the river flooded causing at least CHF 500m worth of damage and wrecking businesses and homes.
The improvements will protect more than 100,000 people.
