Parliament votes to charge patients using hospital emergency units
The lower House of Parliament has voted in favour of charging patients CHF 50 for using the emergency units at hospitals for minor cases.
The move is designed to encourage people to see their local doctor first. The fee would not be refundable from health insurance.
Details still need to be finalized and the upper house has yet to vote. It’s thought the fee would not be charged if the patient is referred by a doctor or if the visit leads to being admitted.
Those opposed to the idea believe it will be too administratively cumbersome and could lead to legal cases.
