NGOs pressure government to strengthen sexual violence laws
The government is being pressured to strengthen its sexual violence laws.
A coalition of 30 NGOs is petitioning the Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter to make sure all non-consensual sexual acts are illegal.
Under the current law, rape is only recognized if there’s coercion and resistance.
Switzerland is a signatory to the Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention which aims to protect woman against violence.
The NGOs claim current laws do not go far enough and fail to respect the convention. They’re also calling for better training for judges and police officers.
