Storms and snowfall batter areas across Switzerland
Strong winds and heavy snow affected many areas of the country over the weekend.
Southern areas such as Ticino and eastern parts of canton Valais saw record breaking snowfall and some villages were evacuated because of avalanche risk. Meteosuisse say between 20 and 120 cm of snow fell on the southern Alps.
There’s a flood alert around Lake Lugano as the level has risen by 25 cm.
A strong foehn wind struck more northern areas. Gales battered Lake Zug and smashed some boats against the habour walls. A light aircraft was overturned at an airfield in Sankt Gallen.
But the snow is good news for the ski resorts. Many have opened earlier and operators are hoping for a good season.
