Snowfall breaks records and causes avalanches
The weekend’s heavy snow has broken records and cut off resorts.
The main falls were in the eastern and southern areas of the country.
The heavy snow also caused avalanches in canton Graubünden.
The Institute for Snow and Avalanche research says in some areas 30cm fell in three days and a record monthly fall has already been broken in Santa Maria in Graubünden which has seen 71 cm in November – breaking the previous record of 69. And there’s still two weeks of the month left.
Road and rail links are being disrupted. The Valais resort of Saas-Fee is unreachable by road – although the train is running.
The risk of avalanches is rated as ‘considerable’ in most of the south eastern parts of the country.
