Investing in public transport makes economic sense
A study is showing it's worthwhile to invest in public transport. Researchers at the EPFL Transport Centre in Lausanne were asked by Geneva public transport to examine the impact of investment into the wider economy.
The results show every million francs pumped into buses and trams provides CHF 1.8m in benefits.
More pubic transport cuts congestion and pollution and opens up land to better development, according to the study.
It also allows some households to cut the number of cars they own.
The study comes a month before the opening of the Léman Express train network. Public transport officials in Geneva claim the new service will revolutionize transport in the Grand Genève region.
