Government crackdown on trucks passing through Alps
The government is to use a carrot and stick approach to get more trucks to use the train link through the Alps and not the roads.
One of the main aims of the new Gotthard train tunnel was to get lorries loaded on trains to make the trip over the mountains.
Environmental groups say the target of 650,000 trucks using the service a year has not been met.
The government says it will spend CHF 180m to subsidize haulage companies using the train – and will also tax highly polluting trucks more that use the trans-Alpine routes.
