Strong earthquake could be on the way

National News // Nov. 7, 2019

The Swiss Seismological Service is warning a strong earthquake could be on the way.

This follows a swarm of minor earth tremors, mainly centered around the Valaisian Alps.

More than a hundred have been detected so far – twelve of them registering more than 2.5 on the Richter Scale.

The tremors have been felt as far as the Bernese Oberland.

The Seismological Service says so many quakes in such a short time is very unusual – and the swarm is still active. Experts say the chance of a bigger quake coming could be as high as 10%.

The last major quake in Switzerland was in the same area - around Sion – in 1964. It had a magnitude of 5.8 and destroyed 1,500 buildings.
