Switzerland ranked 19 for English competence
On any list of global rankings, you would expect Switzerland to be high on any list.
But the latest survey puts it at number 19 – between Kenya and the Philippines.
It’s a survey by Education First and ranks the knowledge of English across the world.
Switzerland is recognized as having a ‘high competence’ level – but misses out on the ‘very high’ ranking.
There are major regional differences. On the whole, German-speaking Swiss have a very high level – but French and Italian speakers, only moderate.
The head of Education First, Christopher Hein, says while schools in Switzerland teach English well, not enough is spoken outside the classroom.
