Mother sentenced for beating daughter, 4, with spoon
A mother has been sentenced to a 20-month suspended prison sentence in Bellinzona for beating her 4-year-old daughter with a wooden spoon – the initial charges of the mother subjecting her daughter to genital mutilation was dropped.
The court heard the young girl was taken to hospital two years ago with injuries around her vagina. Doctors suspected FGM, and the mother was detained for 132 days.
But the court rejected the mutilation charge as the mother is Portuguese and doesn’t have a link with a culture which carries it out.
Instead they believed her account that she beat the girl with a wooden spoon. The mother admitted to hitting the girl on several occasions.
The 35-year-old has to complete a psychological therapy course.
