Kurdish man set on fire outside UNHCR identified
The Kurdish man who set himself on fire outside the UNHCR buildings in Geneva last Wednesday has been identified as a 31-year-old former fighter for the People’s Defence Forces and had battled Islamic State.
He’s currently in a specialist unit at the Vaud Cantonal Hospital in Lausanne suffering burns to 80% of his body.
The man now lives in Germany – but his friends say he was forced into the drastic action as he feels helpless.
Many Kurdish Syrians in Europe say its impossible for them to return home as they face arrest by Turkish authorities.
