The Federal Environment Office says the heat led to a 3.4% rise in the death rate.

There have been far worse death rates. In 2003 around 1,000 more died and in 2015 it was 800.

The office says there are regional differences which can be explained by cantons having a robust heat management system in place.

Some cantons run public service announcements warning people to stay hydrated and regular checks on the elderly living alone.
