Secret underground tunnel unearthed in Geneva
A secret underground tunnel has been discovered in Geneva.
The 2 km long walkway was unearthed in September during routine utility work.
It’s known Geneva has a series or tunnels as part of the old walled city fortifications. Many were built in the 18th Century.
This newly found tunnel is almost 2 meters high and 90 cm wide. There’s graffiti dating between 1840 and 1855 – but nothing later.
The find is not totally unexpected. Works last year on the Boulevard Helvétique revealed old fortifications pointing to a tunnel.
It’s hoped the tunnel will be made accessible to the public at a later date.
