Illegal insecticide thought to have killed at least 600,000 bees
An illegal insecticide is thought to be responsible for the deaths of 24 bee colonies in canton Aargau.
In all, 600,000 of the important insects are thought to have died. But the true number could be much higher and bee keepers across the country are being asked to report colony deaths.
Federal inspectors say the bees died after exposure to fipronil – which is banned across Europe.
It’s thought the chemical was purchased online from an Indian company.
