Fire in French district sends smoke across Lake Geneva
A large fire in a French commercial district sent thick black smoke across Lake Geneva yesterday morning.
More than 100 firefighters fought for hours to bring the blaze under control in Anthy-sur-Léman.
The smoke was clearly visible from central Lausanne.
Clothes and shoe shops were worst hit. Witnesses say the intense heat melted bitumen-covered roofs. Local roads were closed.
The fire broke out before the shops had opened and no one was injured – but staff are likely to be laid off.
