Amateur women's football team disbanded for lack of work permit
The amateur women’s football team in Lugano has been decimated by a decision by the immigration office.
16 players have been told they’re not allowed to play.
The women were studying in Italy as part of a football exchange programme with the United States.
Authorities say the players need a work permit, even if it’s for an amateur team. The team president says he can’t understand the decision – he asks why a student playing for no money would need a permit?
But the migration office says they do. Some of the players have already returned home.
A reduced squad did play on Saturday against Lucerne – but lost 8-nil.
