5G rollout temporarily prohibited
Geneva has confirmed its moratorium on the rolling out of a 5G mobile phone network.
The canton says it’s waiting for a full report from the federal government on the possible risks of the new technology.
The ban doesn’t cover existing masts – some of which are 5G capable – nor does it stop the conversion of those masts. But permission for new installations will be blocked.
Other cantons - such as Vaud and Jura - have also expressed concern and put restrictions in place.
An initiative has been launched to limit the power of new masts and encourage buildings to install low powered repeaters in an effort to cut the amount of radio waves. Campaigners have until April 2021 to collect 100,000 signatures.
