Imam asked to leave Switzerland for beating wife
An Imam in canton Sankt Gallen has to leave the country, following a ruling by the Supreme Court.
The 37-year-old, originally from Kosovo, beat his wife physically and sexually. The 34-year-old woman had to move into a shelter.
The man originally had his residence permit revoked by the canton. But he took the case to the federal court – which backed up the original ruling.
The man argued his rights to a family life under the European Convention of Human Rights were being violated. But the court noted he had lived in Switzerland for under ten years and moved only when in his mid-twenties.
The court said in its ruling the man had showed he did not understand local customs and didn’t respect the legal system.
