Geneva building closed due to possible collapse danger
Are there several buildings in Geneva on the verge of collapsing?
Concerns have been raised after a building in Servette was closed yesterday as engineers fear the foundations are unsafe.
A Migros and a McDonald’s are now closed and residents in the 26 apartments will be moving out in the next few days.
The building on the Rue de la Servette was built in 1964 and it’s believed many architects at the time didn’t think they would last more than 50 years.
Experts are now determining if the problem is isolated – or is it common to all buildings built in the same era.
But the Geneva cantonal architect, Francesco Della Casa, says there’s no need to panic. Collapses are very rare in Switzerland. But other structures will be checked.
