Rhine fishermen urged to catch and kill koi carp
Cantonal wildlife experts in Basel are urging those fishing in the lakes and rivers to catch and kill any koi carp they find.
One fisherman videoed a koi carp in the Rhine River near Birsfelden and told the 20 minutes newspaper he’d seen another a few days before.
Cantonal experts say they’re not surprised. Its not uncommon for people to get rid of their fish by letting them go in the wild. But koi carp are resilient and can survive winter in rivers and lakes and are threat to the local ecosystem. If any are caught, they should not be returned.
Abandoning animals in the wild is a criminal offence.
