The darkness was not total and there was some cloud – but on the whole, people in Geneva took the opportunity for the big switch off to look at the stars.

Communes around Geneva – extending into France – switched off street lights to allow amateur star gazers to see the night sky. 

On the Plainpalais in the middle of the city dozens came to hear from professional astronomers about the planets and the stars. 

But some people missed the street lights and used their phones to light the way. 

But in the middle of the city, shops and restaurants kept their lights burning and many didn’t even notice the street lights were off.
