CHF 6bn set aside for new fighter jets
The upper chamber of Parliament has given the green light to the purchase of new fighter jets.
The new planes will cost CHF 6bn – maybe more due to the conditions attached to the purchase.
The parliamentarians are insisting the manufacturer spend the same amount of money in Switzerland, using so called offset transactions.
Aircraft components could be produced in Switzerland and maintenance contracts handed to Swiss firms. This could push the price up by as much as 20%.
It’s hoped this will persuade voters to back the deal – as they will have the final say.
