National News // Sept. 10, 2019

A Brazilian woman has been denied a category C resident permit as she lives only 100 meters away from a communal line determining the language she needs to speak.

New residency requirements mean an applicant for a C permit must speak the language in the area in which they live. The woman recently moved village in canton Bern. Her new home village is designated German speaking – which she doesn’t speak.

But only 100m away is a village which is French speaking – which she speaks fluently.

The Bern migration office is not showing any signs of understanding. She’s been told to either move house or stay on a B permit.
