Swiss airport traffic to significantly increase over next 20 years
All Swiss airports need to be expanded to cope with rising passenger numbers.
Zurich airport says it expects traffic to increase at around 3% a year for the next 20 years.
A study from the University of Sankt Gallen confirms that view – and foresees similar grown at Geneva and Basel.
A spokeswoman for Zurich airport says it needs a new terminal to handle 50m passengers a year by 2040. The runways can cope with 350,000 movements a year – currently the number is 278,000.
The university study says proposed carbon taxes are not high enough to cut numbers.
