Girl, 5, fined CHF 100 for travelling without ticket

National News // By Tay Kinnear // Aug. 16, 2019

Transport officials in Schaffhausen are being accused of over-zealousness after fining a 5-year-old girl CHF 100 for not having a valid bus ticket.

Her mother, Barbara Müller, says she couldn’t believe it. The young girl was travelling with her 10-year-old sister, who has a pass. The mother says she thought those under 6 travelled for free.

The 5-year-old was also told to sign the form recognizing she’d been fined. She can barely write.

The actual law could be confusing. The mother is right that those under 6 travel free – if accompanied by someone over 12. Two children under 12 travelling together both have to have a ticket.

It sounds strange, but Schaffhausen Public Transport say they believe 12 is too young to be responsible for someone even younger and want to discourage it.

The fine has been cut to CHF 50 as a sign of goodwill.
