Rescuers in canton Valais say there is no chance a missing 6-year-old girl and her 37-year-old father will be found alive after their car was swept away by a mudslide during the storms on Sunday.

A river broke its banks and brought down hundreds of tonnes of mud and rocks in Chamoson.

The local mayor defended the decision not to use sirens to warn the population as it could have been counterproductive. It was safer for people to stay indoors – if the sirens had sounded the instinct would have been to flee he told the press.
